My windows PC goes into automatic repair then black screen with cursor – Microsoft Community – 2. How to Recover Lost Data after Windows Black Screen Crashes
Hi all, sorry if this covering old ground but I have read some of the suggested posts and cannot see a precise match. I have had Windows 10 installed since I think August last year. Had a few issues here and there but nothing major. I now have a black screen for about two hours now and no text visible.. The HDD light occasionally flickers but there doesn’t seem to be any extensive activity. Sorry for the inconvenience caused to you.
I suggest you to perform a Startup repair and then run a check disk to check if there is any corruption with the hard drive. Step 1: Start up Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting. Start up Repair scans your computer for the problem and then tries to fix it so your computer can start correctly.
Note: Refer to the section «Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool» in the above article for creating the tool. Step 2: Once you are able to get to the desktop screen, try running check disk on the hard drive to see if there are any corruptions. NOTE: The root drive has to be C: and the command may schedule a task at the system startup, if it does, then press Y to schedule a task and restart the computer to perform check disk.
Important: While performing check disk on the hard drive, if any bad sectors are found, then check disk will try to repair that sector. Any data available on a bad sector might be lost. Once Check Disk completes, boot the computer and then check if the issue persists. Hope this will help you. Keep us posted with the status of the issue to assist you further. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help.
Thanks for your feedback. Using Start-up Repair, the system did the ‘Attempting to Repair’ stage and then rebooted. The screen then goes black apart from a mouse pointer, which I can move as much as I like but appears to be the limit of my interaction with the system at that point. I have used the command prompt via the Windows disc to run chkdsk and some bad sectors and unreadable locations were found and fixed but the issue remains.
Have tried to use a System Restore Point but am advised I need to select an operating system first and to reboot,. Have tried to reset Windows 10 but get ‘The drive where Windows is installed is locked.
Unlock the drive and start again’. I have also experience the dreaded flashing black screen and cursor with a blue revolving orb. This occurred randomly when opening Chrome browser but it is really due to a hardware issue, in my case an Asus graphics card Nvidia driver. I would add that this has happened to me over several Fast Ring builds so Microsoft need to address this by checking for the issue when updating with new builds. The easiest way for Microsoft System Builders would be to force a temporarily enable of hardware updates if not already enabled by user in updates , then update the hardware in the background as the build update is initialising and then redo any previous user settings.

The way I got around this was to do a ctrl alt del to get task manager up. With this up you can use Create a New Task and run your commands to get things done.

I was able to open Windows Edge and that eventually led me to a «working window» :- 1 Open Control Panel and search «troubleshooting» and then click on «View all» in the left hand pane. I did not even have to restart my machine to get it working properly again. In reply to brakespear’s post on January 9, It is a simple but useful way to get around.

I attempted to use my Dell laptop this morning and when I booted it up, it went directly into Automatic repair mode, but got stuck on a black screen without anything happening.
After a couple seconds, a cursor appears that you can move around, but still nothing else but a black screen.
I have tried to get into Windows Recovery mode so I can do a safe mode boot, but I cannot manage to actually get to Windows recovery by holding the power button during the boot process and repeating 3 times. A few times while attempting to get to Windows recovery, it did run a hardware check and no problems were found.
